Desire Beyond the Known World

Deseo más allá del mundo conocido

The teacher explores how identification with a limited self suppresses natural impulses and passion, and how deeper desires often lead us toward fear rather than away from it.

Desire Beyond the Known World

The teacher explores how identification with a limited self suppresses natural impulses and passion, and how deeper desires often lead us toward fear rather than away from it.

All the natural impulses of planning, doing, creativity, living, and passion start to become suppressed, and there is a mood of darkness, of depression. That is not natural, and it is not free. It is still an identification, now with a construct of a "me" that has no control.

Another way of saying it is: you do have control, you do choose, but you are not what you think you are. That "you" is much vaster than what you imagine it to be. Because you confuse it with something small and limited, the choices come from that filter of limitation. The passion comes from that filter. The direction comes from that limitation.

A spectrum, not a binary

This is a spectrum. It is not fully limited or fully free. We can move into more identification, more limitation, or less. That is why the simple exercise of looking into your current experience and asking, "What am I? Who am I?" while putting memory aside will allow you to fall into a beingness that is less limited.

Fear and the deeper drives

We will come up against our fears. As we deepen in connection with our desires, they will come from a place beyond our limited sense of self. When they do, they will not be in service of our fears. Then we will be in the position of choosing whether to move in service of fear or not.

When desire is in service of fear, it is in service of not feeling fear: doing what I think I need to do so that I am comfortable, not experiencing fear, not experiencing pain. The other, deeper drives and directions will likely take us in directions where fear will come up, where we will feel the fear and the pain.

We all have to do this in our lives all the time, but it can go deeper. There are desires we often have that are of a universal kind, and we struggle with them because they are moving us to a place of risk and discomfort, outside of the known world.
