Staying Open to the Process

The teacher encourages a student not to settle too quickly on a single insight, but to remain in a longer, ongoing process of listening and creative exploration.

It's a good idea, isn't it? There's nothing wrong with it.

That's one good idea. Note it, but don't wrap up the process and the exploration as though that's the only idea. It's a valid one, but give it time for a process with much more potential, because I think you have it. That might just be the answer, but I think it's too soon to say you've completed the process of exploring your options. It's too quick.

The practice of constant listening

What I'm describing is also a process of constant listening, every day, for the rest of your life. This is an active functioning in me every day. It's not something you do once in a challenging situation and then discard because the challenge is over. It's listening and responding, listening and responding.

The creative process and the mental openness involved are, in a sense, a practice: a muscle to keep exercising. The more you explore options, the more options appear. The more you explore, the more it becomes a virtuous cycle.
