Waking Up Makes Growing Up Possible

A reflection on how awakening enables the body-mind to release its deepest fears, and why even joy and peace can feel terrifying when identification remains.

As much as we talk about the very important subjects of body-mind shifts, what I call "growing up" or growing outside of things, it is equally important to highlight the dimension of "waking up," which is what makes that entire process of freeing the body-mind possible.

Why awakening comes first

The reason is simple. What normally blocks us from fully allowing the process of shifting and growing is the ultimate fear of disappearance, which is the biggest illusion. That fear can only be seen through by waking up. When we can see clearly that no matter how much fear and pain appears, we will not disappear, that it cannot be the end of us, then the body is enabled to fully let go into whatever is appearing, whatever is coming up at the deeper level.

The deeper layers: fear, bliss, and peace

This letting go operates at the level of the most profound feeling-fears and pains. It also operates at the level of something that is very difficult to be with until we awaken: the deep, deep energetics of joy and bliss. These energies can shatter our sense of limitation and feel terrifying if we are still identified. Even peace can feel terrifying if we are still in a body that is identified.
