A gentle invitation to look closely at the persistent feeling that something is missing and to consider that it may not be true.
Notice the sense of something that is
not how it should be,
not how it could be.
Notice the usual thoughts, the stories, the narrative,
the explanation of what it is,
the beliefs around what it should be.
The conviction underneath
This sense has a flavor of a conviction.
If only this and that were different,
then I would be okay.
Then things would finally be resolved.
Resolved.
Then we dive into thought to follow that belief,
that narrative,
that plan.
Looking closer
Look closer at that sense.
That sense of restlessness or something missing,
something not okay.
Notice how it appears before there are thoughts about it.
Is it sensations,
the felt sense,
is it localized?
It's one of the hardest things to look at.
All of the discomforts, resistances, deep narratives will all come up,
get activated.
Letting it be present
As you let this discomfort,
whatever form it takes,
as you let this bubble up and be present,
get familiar with it,
close to it.
Let your attention settle
so that it can be present
without the fleeing into thoughts and stories.
Just this subtle sense
of something missing,
something that could be different.
You might feel it in the heart.
It's the longing, it's the aching,
or it's a contraction or worry,
fear,
or a mix.
Contemplating that it may not be true
And contemplate the possibility
that it is not real,
that it is not true.
That it could be let go of and dissolve.
Notice any attachment to it.
Notice the sense, possibly, of a loss if it was not present.
The void or an emptiness too vast.
Consider it might just be a belief,
a belief that is chosen,
nurtured,
cherished.
Staying close
This sense of restlessness, worry, longing,
whatever form it takes at every moment.
Dare to look at it very closely,
with very still, gentle, open attention.
That deep core sense of the problem that is here,
that which is missing,
that which should be different.
Let it move and change its form.
Emptiness, a sense of pain or fear or longing, worry.
Come to it
with a deep conviction,
a deep open inquiry.
What if nothing is missing
What if it is not true?
What if it is not real?
What if nothing is missing?
What if this moment everything is exactly as it should be?
Look at the forms and shapes this "no" takes.
Attachment. No, things are not as they should be.
The resistance.
The pushing.
The struggling.
The fighting.
The explaining.
The justifying.
All the narratives that come.
Come to them gently, with a deep conviction:
what if it is all, exactly this moment, exactly as it should be?
Not as a belief.
Just as a fundamental possibility.
