The closer we get to understanding what is real, what is true, and removing self-deception, the more subtle it becomes. It moves closer to a sensation where we start to feel an angst or an anxiety, and it becomes harder to put words to it or name it. But there will be a sense that something is missing.
The strategy of contrast
We will also try to find strategies by slipping from one side to another. For example, if it has been all work, work, work, now the solution becomes no work. That contrast helps us see: "This is very different from what I thought it was." This is why, when we make big changes or smaller changes, like taking a vacation or going on a retreat, we create contrast. We can then experience reality in a different way. By doing that, we see that what seemed to be real has now changed, so it must not have been that real.
