A meditation on noticing what pulls us away from the present moment and discovering that distraction often begins with a quiet sense of distrust.
Meditation is trust
Meditation is trust.
To fully trust without a single thread of holding back.
During the practice of meditation, intentional sitting,
you can create a moment in time
to see what gets in the way of trust.
To observe our mind,
to never take the mind as an enemy.
We make the mind into our enemy
so that we pretend to have no responsibility.
The practice of observing the breath and anchoring the mind
can go only so far.
Mind is a servant,
always offering distraction.
Distraction.
And we choose.
The unknown
At every moment, right now,
there is a mysterious unfoldment,
a co-creation of reality.
An infinite unknown,
so vast, ever new, ever unpredictable.
The more we sink into this truth of reality,
the unknown,
the less there is room for this distrust.
When distraction arises
So when you find yourself distracted,
there's an opportunity.
Opportunity to feel right now what is happening right now.
It might be a very subtle pulling away.
Contracting,
a subtle current of fear or distrust,
a need to control.
If you notice this, you struck gold.
Don't just force yourself out of distraction.
The mechanism,
the motive,
the seduction, the temptation,
the habit.
The distraction starts with a promise
that something can be better than right now.
Could be a big thing,
the most subtle imperceptible difference,
and off we go on the train of distrust.
If only, if only, if only,
then I'll be okay.
The infinite wheel of samsara.
The archetypal story
Notice that.
Keep looking.
The archetypal story of distraction.
Temptation.
If only, then I will be okay.
The mind has the power to create infinite stories.
Infinite if onlys.
When we're bored with one, we go to the next.
And back to our previous favorites.
The root of lack
At the root of it, there is a sense of lack.
Right now, feeling maybe subtle,
something's missing.
What is missing is this trust.
This, in religious terms, faith.
Not faith in something.
Absolute total trust in now.
You cannot choose to trust.
You can choose to let go of distrust.
Where every moment is an opportunity to free fall.
Observing your favorite if onlys
So in meditation, just observe your favorite what ifs, if onlys.
Big or small.
If only my neck didn't hurt.
If only I had more money.
You know them.
This is not something we want to see.
They're deeply attached.
The more distraction you notice,
the bigger the opportunity for freedom and well-being.
Something deep
The suffering,
the struggle,
the longing.
Something deep.
Deep calling.
Divine being wanting to be seen and lived.
Every sensation,
every sound.
I am.
